Day 1: Using Simple Shapes
Drawing birds starting from a simple egg shape
Welcome to the Animal Character Design Mini-Course! Over the next 5 days, you’ll learn fun techniques to draw animal characters in just a few quick steps.
In this 5-part video series, I’ll be sharing how to:
- Draw a series of birds using simple shapes
- Transition from observation to imagination
- Explore character design by starting with head shapes and facial features
- Tap into your own unique style and move away from strict references
- Add colour and your own artistic flair!
Today’s Task: Follow along as we draw a series of birds.
What You Will Need:
- Paper and a pencil, with the option to use your iPad.
- I’ll be using blue and black watercolour pencils in my demonstrations for clarity in the videos. However, if you’d like to be more detailed, feel free to use a colored pencil alongside an HB or 2B graphite pencil.
- On Day 5, we’ll be adding colour, so use whatever you have on hand. I’ll be using watercolours and coloured pencils on watercolour paper.
Happy Sketching!
