Welcome to the Watercolour Wonder Mini-Course where Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” inspire four lessons in watercolour painting and character design! I’m excited to have you join me on this journey of wonder and imagination.

In this 4-part video series, join me as I share how to:

  • Day 1: Paint the Blooms of Wonderland

  • Day 2: Create Whimsical Wonderland Faces

  • Day 3: Draw an Alice character from Reference

  • Day 4: Paint Alice’s Adventures

You Will Need

  • Watercolour Paint: 3 Primary Colours: I’ll be using warm primaries—Winsor and Newton Cerulean Blue, Cadmium Red, and Cadmium Yellow.

  •  Watercolour Paper: A sheet of watercolour paper: I’m using a Bockingford watercolour pad, A4, 200gsm, cold-pressed. You can also use your sketchbook, leftover paper, or any watercolour paper on hand, as long as it’s at least 200gsm

  •  Watercolour Brush: I’m using a number 6 round sable watercolour brush, which holds plenty of water and has a fine tip allowing for fine detailing.

  •  Palette: For mixing colours. If you don’t have a palette, a porcelain plate will work wonders!

  •  Vessel for Water: To hold clean water for your painting.

  •  Paper Towel: For mopping up excess water.

    Extras

    • Good Lighting: I recommend using natural light by sitting next to a window. If this is  not possible, then a good desk lamp.

Tilt Your Page: Positioning your painting at an angle for easier painting. I use an artboard, but you can also use a large clipboard leaning against a couple of books.
