Day 3: How to Explore Character
Drawing a series of bear characters starting with different shaped heads
Welcome to Day 3!
In today’s lesson, I’ll be sharing a process I use to explore character design. We’ll start by drawing a series of circles on a page (using an egg cup, a small glass, or a cardboard template). By using various reference photos of bears, we’ll identify simple shapes for the head and facial features. Follow along as I guide you to get your creative ideas flowing!
When it comes to character design, it’s important not to settle on your first idea. Instead, dive into the flow and enjoy getting familiar with your animal character. I’ll show you how to make the most of every idea as we explore a bear character together.
Today’s focus will be on the face shapes and adding facial features. You’ll see how subtle changes in the size and placement of the snout, nose, eyes, and mouth can dramatically affect the style and look of your bear characters.
Today’s Task: Join me in drawing a series of bear faces.
I’d love to see what you come up with, so be sure to share your bears with me on Instagram using #acdtask and #ninarycroft!
